All About Dog Allergies with Green Valley Veterinary Care

Can dogs have allergies like we do?

Dogs absolutely have allergies like we do; the difference is their symptoms. So, whereas humans cough and sneeze when allergic to pollens or things outside, with primarily respiratory symptoms, dogs exhibit symptoms of allergies through their skin.

What are the differences between environmental, food, and flea allergies in dogs?

With flea allergies, some dogs are actually allergic to flea spit. When bitten by fleas, they cause intense inflammation of their skin and a lot of itching. Environmental allergies are triggered by things in the environment, like pollen from plants and trees. Food allergies typically present gastrointestinal problems like vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss, with additional skin symptoms.

How do I know if my dog has allergies?

Seeing a veterinarian is a good starting point to discuss why your dog is itching. Itching is the number one symptom of allergies in dogs. We can test for skin infections and work to determine the root cause. If allergies are present, we identify whether they are flea, environmental, food-related, or a combination.

What steps will a veterinarian take to diagnose a dog with allergies?

After controlling the skin infection, if your dog remains itchy, we might suggest a food trial. Additionally, we can perform blood testing for allergies by taking a sample from your dog, sending it to a lab, and identifying what your dog is allergic to.

What are some common dog allergy triggers?

Common allergy triggers include pollinating trees, plants, and grasses. Insect or flea bites are also significant triggers.

What treatment options are there for dog allergy relief?

We use Cytopoint, a monoclonal antibody that helps with skin itching, sometimes referred to as an allergy shot. Apoquel is another common allergy medication. Treatments also involve managing skin infections with topicals like shampoos and mousses. Allergy treatments include Cytopoint or immunotherapy shots, Apoquel medication, and topical management with shampoos, mousses, and conditioners for skin health.
